Scottish Power was first set up as a nationalised company in 1990 in preparation for the privatisation of the previously government-owned Scottish electricity industry. It was privatised in 1991, and in 1995 it bought MANWEB (Merseyside And North Wales Electricity Board) and merged it into the company.
It was bought by Iberdrola in 2006 and has since become the first of Britain's big six energy suppliers to generate 100% renewable electricity, having sold off its gas plants and closed down all its coal-fired power stations. It now produces all of its electricity over 40 wind farms across the UK that are operated by Iberdrola, its parent group.
It now has around 5 million home and business customers across the UK, and is using its green credentials to set itself apart from the other big players and disruptor brands.

Scottish Power is owned by Bilbao-based Iberdrola, which bought the supplier back in 2006. The Spanish energy giants claim to be the world's biggest producer of wind energy, which would explain Scottish Power's green credentials. Iberdrola is a big investor in renewables across the globe, and it also supplies energy in Spain and Mexico.
Saving money is most people's motivation for switching energy suppliers, but if you're among the growing number of households who are becoming more environmentally conscious, you might want to switch to a supplier that offers green energy.
Although many suppliers claim to offer 100% green electricity, not all deals have the green credentials you might expect. But this isn't an issue with Scottish Power, which only generates renewable electricity from its UK-based windfarms.
If you're looking for a more environmentally-minded electricity supplier, you can be sure that Scottish Power's domestic green tariffs are backed by 100% green electricity. You'll also have the peace of mind that comes with switching to one of the UK's biggest energy suppliers.
Any electricity we use is generated from a combination of different fuels such as nuclear, coal and renewable sources (wind, water and the sun). The different amounts of each fuel contributed makes up a supplier's fuel mix<.
Here is Scottish Power's gas and electricity fuel mix as of April 1, 2019, to March 31, 2020:
Electricity supplied by Scottish Power % of total | Average for GB (for comparison) % of total | |
---|---|---|
Coal | 4.0% | 3.9% |
Natural Gas | 50.0% | 39.4% |
Nuclear | 6.0% | 16.6% |
Renewable | 36.0% | 37.9% |
Other | 4.0% | 2.2% |
Total | 100% | 100% |
Please note, the above is Scottish Power's total fuel mix, which includes fuel generated for non-green tariffs. The electricity supplied for its green tariffs comes from 100% renewable sources.
Switching energy suppliers is simple with The Energy Shop - simply pop your postcode in the box at the top of the page to get started.
It helps if you have a copy of your latest bill to hand when switching, as we need to take some details on your current energy deal and usage.
Once we have this information, we'll then show you a list of the best energy deals currently available.
All you then need to do is choose the one you like best, and we'll take care of the rest of the switch - you'll be with your new supplier within 21 days, and there'll be no disruption to your supply.
